Message from the Director and Academics and School Life

At Kempenfelt Bay School, we pride ourselves in our ability to create an appetite for knowledge. We offer a curriculum that is rigorous yet flexible, and which extends far beyond the four walls of the classroom. We know that when children understand why they are learning what they are learning, stronger connections are made, and material is better retained. We achieve this by linking what they learn in class to the world around them.

Our dedicated and talented faculty is committed to the development of the whole child, intellectually, physically, and emotionally. We offer a challenging educational experience through child-centered, inquiry based learning activities that set us apart: challenging academics, award-winning choir, jazz and instrumental bands, comprehensive physical education and co-curricular programs, an enriched visual arts program, and commitment to community and service. Through the Six Pillars of Character®, a nationwide youth ethics initiative, we foster the development of positive values, integrity and ethics. Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship are the foundation of all aspects of school life. We empower our students to assume active roles in the school in both local and global communities.

As a fully certified International Baccalaureate World School, KBS is committed to promoting international-mindedness. From the moment one walks through the doors of our school, a picture of the cultural diversity of our students and faculty are evident. Students learn to look at issues from more than one point of view, and develop a sense that they can be right, but others can be right too. Displays of work, evidence of community and service, discussions amongst students both in and out of the classroom, are proof positive that our students see the world around them with new and clearer perspectives. We have a holistic vision of education, one that emphasizes the student as an interpreter, rather than a recipient. The IB Learner Profile transcends all divisions of our school. They are the characteristics that students should have, such as being knowledgeable, well balanced, principled and open minded.

Assessment at Kempenfelt Bay School is intended to encourage students to keep learning. Done properly, we understand that assessment can not only measure achievement, but can create achievement. There are three formal reporting periods each year. Through the use of formative assessment, a child’s progress is carefully monitored and instruction tailored to that student. Along with needed one on one assistance provided by all faculty, by the time summative assessments are conducted, our students are successful.

Our excellent academic programming geared towards 21st Century learning and technology, along with a strong emphasis on study skills and approaches to learning, allows Kempenfelt Bay School students to be well prepared for high school and a successful future. Because of technology, our world is getting smaller and smaller. Today’s industry will expect our children to be internationally minded. Kempenfelt Bay School prepares our students for the future they are going to have.

If you are new to Kempenfelt Bay School, I invite you to browse our website and visit our school in order to get a true sense of how rich our academic programme is.
