Associate Head of School

Susan Davidson, Associate Head of School At Kempenfelt Bay School, it is important to us that we meet the needs of our students by challenging them to be problem solvers and critical thinkers. We encourage our students to develop a love of learning, and while our curriculum document is based on the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines, we strive to stretch the minds of our students beyond the basics.

Faculty utilize varied and effective teaching and assessment strategies to plan programming that best meets the needs of our students. Hands-on activities that engage many of the senses, help children to more easily grasp concepts. It is not uncommon to witness a Medieval festival or an Egyptian mummification and burial of a chicken, to make learning more meaningful.

Formal assessments in the form of report cards are delivered three times throughout the year. Anecdotal comments and grades provide a clear picture of each student’s progress. Parent-teacher interviews are conducted formally twice a year, but teachers communicate daily with parents either at drop-off or pick-up time, or through voice and email.

True to our mission statement, teaching to the whole child remains a priority. This is further augmented by our programmes in Character Education such as “The Six Pillars of Character”, “Values, Influences, and Peers” and “Bullies Have An Effect on Everyone”. Students who learn about respect, fair-play, and acceptance of others, grow into community-minded citizens who can better demonstrate the qualities that are necessary for success after graduation from KBS.

Our co-curricular programming involves choirs, art clubs, athletics, drama, instrumental music and a variety of opportunities that enable children to experiment and excel in these activities. Faculty participate in the implementation of these clubs and enjoy the interaction of students from all age groups.

Our goal at KBS, is to develop confident, articulate, well rounded individuals, who have acquired the tools necessary to be successful in their academic endeavours and their interpersonal relationships.
